The Surrealistics
The Surrealistics
Meet five of your favorite Frankensteins. Stephanie Brown & The Surrealistics is a five piece rock ensemble featuring front lady Stephanie Brown. The group's inception began in late September of 2016 as a duo between Brown and lead guitarist Ryan Amyot. The duo began co-writing tunes hoping for a sultry subdued sound, but eventually morphed into a psychedelic rock five-piece with organ heavy riffs. Bringing in members Michael Stell on keys, Andrew Ware on drums, and Hunter Stewart on bass, their sound has been hastily evolving, and will continue to see rapid growth throughout 2018 and beyond. Brown has been performing in the greater San Diego, CA area with several groups over the past few years, including psych rock band Ocelot, that had the pleasure of opening up for the Budos Band at the Belly Up in 2016. In addition to this, she had the pleasure of recording at the legendary Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, AL in March of 2016 for the release of the Gregg Allman's final masterpiece album, Southern Blood - working alongside talented producer Don Was and closely with Allman himself. Stephanie sings in a raspy contralto, her lyrics often hauntingly melancholic with subtle existential themes. Their sound strives to bring back a 1950's-60's sound. So far, their debut tunes have been compared very broadly to artists including: Link Wray, Mazzy Star, Grace Slick, Lana Del Rey, The Dead Weather and Nirvana.
Imagery Machine
Imagery Machine
Since their formation in 2015, San Diego band Imagery Machine has set the local music scene on fire. Their distinct style of female-fronted indie rock psychedelia with undertones of reggae and progressive rock create an intoxicating, dynamic sound. Described as sounding similar to The Cranberries, Florence + The Machine and The Police, this troupe is fronted by the sultry voice of Jennie Dreams, with a band featuring accomplished musicians bassist/vocalist Will Parsons, drummer Tyler Shimkus and lead guitarist Eli Ayub. Imagery Machine was recently nominated for Best Indie/Alternative Band at the 2019 San Diego Music Awards, and the band has garnished two more nominations for their self-titled EP and Skydriver EP in 2017 and 2018 respectively. The band’s musical energy and passion shines through their immersive live performances, which feature kaleidoscopic lighting, frenzied stage presences, and an imaginative use of glitter and face paint. Imagery Machine has captivated a wide range of audiences; from street fairs, farmers markets and beer festivals along the coast of California to San Diego mainstay rock clubs such as The Casbah, Belly Up and Soda Bar. The band also played their first international shows in 2018 with more planned for the near future. This group of musical trailblazers is showing no sign of stopping, with big plans to release more much more content in 2019.
The Night Howls
The Night Howls
With old souls and young hearts, San Diego female fronted blues-rock band The Night Howls deliver a blast-from-the-past performance that is inevitably intermingled with a twist of modern cool. Warm, fiery vocals intertwined with seventies-inspired guitar riffs, haunting organ and a rhythmic pull that promises a captivating experience full of integrity. Heavily influenced by the roughness of old records, legendary female powerhouses, such as Janis Joplin and Grace Slick, and of course the blues, soul, and country roots of American music that made Rock what it is today. After many years of struggling to jive with the force-fed formulaic songs of modern radio, The Night Howls set for with a vision of creating music without automated tweaks and representing unaltered Rock & Roll. Comprised of Kimmi Bitter, Willis Farnsworth, and Ben Neal in 2016, their beginnings consisted of playing triple weekly three hour gigs focusing on the importance of tightness and chemistry that makes the unbreakable foundation of a rock band. Fast forward through several tours, an LP and a single, 2019 brings a fresh EP demonstrating the growth that comes with perseverance and showcasing good old fashioned rock and roll — the way it should be.
