Mimi Zulu
Mimi Zulu
Mimi Zulu is an American singer, lyricist, and poet. In a recording career that has spanned nearly two decades, her repertoire includes: soul, blues, jazz, trip-hop, electronica, spoken word, and psychadelic.

Music has always been a driving force in Mimi's life. In 2nd grade, she had her tonsils removed. Her mother rewarded her with a cassette player. Lying in bed, a constant stream of music healed and reformed her. When she could get up and about again, it was to the march of a new beat. Mimi knew she wanted to be part of giving this energy to people...she started to write, dance, and sing.

Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Prince, and The Eurythmics shaped her young voice. During high school, she began performing her poetry with the guitarist/bass player she would eventually marry. Together, they delved into experimental and psychadelic realms, along with the underground hip-hop circuit in their hometown of Indianapolis. This led to the formation of the band F.U.Z.Z. in 1997. Over the next 15 years, Mimi put together some of the most deeply intriguing independant albums, including: Zen Jai Qwa, F.U.Z.Z., Overnight, Peace of Mind, Group Mind, and Tentacle.

Mimi is dedicated to the expansive and magical quality of the creative process. "The less I think of me, the more the trueness comes out." With her big bright eyes and disarming laugh, she is a beaming embodiment of authentic spirit. Passionate about equality and community, Mimi's lyrics are inspired by the lives of those whose voices often go unheard. Her art is an offering of encouragement, hope, and empowerment; a testimony to the value of a life lived simply, openly, and from the heart.

2013 saw the release of her first solo album, A Love Parade. This funky collection reveals an intimate look into the many tones and textures of Mimi Zulu.

For Mimi, music provides the opportunity to feel what's real in a world gone not-so-comfortably numb. "The goal," she says, "is to be in a space where I can remind people to just think. To remind them of their insides, of their soul and their feelings. To make them feel their own skin."

Mimi now resides in southern California where she collaborates with a variety of incredible musicians in her underground basement studio.
